FIPSE-CANS

FIPSE-CANS, led by Dr. James Laffey, is a design-based research project focused on developing the social navigation tool "Context-aware Activity Notification System" (CANS) for use in teaching and learning within the Sakai learning management system. CANS is a notification system which tracks users' activities within the learning system, stores those actions in a database, and then is able to provide reports to instructors and learners about that activity. The reports can be in the form of email, tables, or visualizations (such as bar graphs).

Role and Description

My primary role was as a graduate research assistant on the project. Much of our research work was focused on how teachers and learners perceived the information they got from the CANS tools, how they used that information in their learning and its perceived usefulness and effect on teaching and learning behaviors. In addition, we also spent time analyzing trace data produced by CANS in order to understand learner behavior both "active" behavior (posting) and "passive" behavior (reading, "lurking", etc). Qualitative and quantitative methods were used. See the "writings from this research" below for specific topics and outcomes. The project was complete as of December 2010; however, the FIPSE-CANS team is continuing to finish publication writings.
